Phillips Guild mentors Craig Parmerlee and John S. Hague meet with students of Broad Ripple High School in Indianapolis to discuss the sound spectrum and how it relates to instrument timbre. In this video, suitable for classroom use, we use Izotope RX6 to visualize a wide variety of sounds in order to understand how the sound spectrum works and how overtones contribute to the characteristic timbre of instruments. In addition, we examine other interesting sounds like klaxon horns, thunderstorms, vacuum cleaners, and people laughing.
